GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

ELS means “English Language Support”. People usually use the word ELS to talk about teaching English to people who do not speak English.

The M.I.S. ELS program is established to provide students with the vocabulary and grammatical structures needed for everyday life and for school performance.  The program functions for students in Year 1 and up.

grasp the academic, social, and cultural aspects of the English language through the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening..

The ELS teacher uses sound instructional techniques to support learners’ development with the objective of helping students to develop the language skills necessary to be successful at school.  The ELS program provides the English Language Learner (ELL) the opportunity to grasp the academic, social, and cultural aspects of the English language through the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

ENTRY CRITERIA

The target population for the ELS program is defined in term of the competency of each student in English.  Any student who may be classified within any of the categories listed below should be provided English Language Support instruction.

Registration and Identification

No matter when they join MIS, we set out to provide all of our students with the best possible chance to realise their potential and achieve academic success. It is, therefore, very important that we are able to provide the right level of support for those children who show an aptitude for learning but may be behind their peers in their level of English language ability.

Assessment and ELS Placement

All prospective students will be asked to take an English proficiency test as part of our admissions procedure. These are tests used to determine whether or not a student needs extra English language support to meet the demands of a curriculum that is delivered entirely in English.

If a student is assessed as needing ELS, either during the admissions process or after joining the school, it is a condition of their continued acceptance at MIS that they receive that support until such time as they are able to fully participate in all of their regular lessons.

ELS Levels and Teaching Strategies

If a student is assessed as needing ELS, either during the admissions process or after joining the school, it is a condition of their continued acceptance at MIS that they receive that support until such time as they are able to fully participate in all of their regular lessons.

ELS FEE TABLE

There is an additional fee for ELS provision depending on the level and intensity of the appropriate programme. Under the moderate support programmes students would attend between 2 and 4 ESL lessons per week. The intensive programme, for students whose English language ability is especially underdeveloped, provides for 5 to 10 lessons. The level and frequency of ELS lessons will be decided by the ELS teachers in collaboration with the ELS coordinator.

Note: ELS programme charges are all per term.

Exit Criteria

The exit criteria provided below for English Language Learners (ELLs) represent valid and reliable evidence of a student’s English language proficiency to exit from an English language instructional program.

In order to meet the school’s ELS programme exit criteria, all of the required exit criteria listed below must be met:

1.  Achieving an advanced score on the Idea Proficiency Test.

2. Teacher recommendation.

3. Classroom performance.

The ELS Educational Program

A variety of educational materials – trade and teacher adapted or produced – are used to support the theme-based and unit-based ELS program.  Proficiency encompasses the four skill areas:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) is addressed, but the main focus is the development of basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS).  Content vocabulary and comprehension needs are addressed in all levels of the program.

Amount of Time in ELS Class

The following chart indicates the minimum amount of time each day a student attends the ELS class.  This varies depending on the ELS level in which the student has been identified.

Level 1: Beginner 100 minutes daily

Level 2:   Early intermediate  50 – 100 minutes daily

Level 3:  Intermediate  150 – 250 minutes weekly

Level 4:  Early advanced 100 – 150 minutes weekly

Level 5:   Advanced  Exited

Reporting Student Progress

Program Evaluation Procedures

Students in the ELS program will receive a report every term as part of their general school report.

Program evaluation is conducted on an on-going basis via input from administrators, the ELS Committee, staff and parents.  Most importantly, program analysis is conducted by interpreting student progress and achievement.
